There are plenty of nasty things floating around in untreated, unfiltered water, many of which present a risk to human health and quality of life. Sadly, many contaminants can be readily found in drinking water. Among these, some commonly encountered contaminants include lead and other heavy metals as well as volatile organic compounds, also known as volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and dangerous pathogens. However, there are plenty of other insidious compounds out there that are lesser-known. One of these is methyl tertiary butyl ether, better known by the abbreviation MtBE. What Is MtBE?Methyl tertiary butyl ether, also more commonly recognized as MtBE, is a flammable liquid compound that is manufactured and has a few different industrial applications. Its most widespread use was as an additive in unleaded gasoline. MtBE, as a liquid component of gasoline, improves oxygen and octane levels, improving the oxygenate ratings of the gasoline and helping to reduce emissions. MtBE was widely added to gasoline through the 80s and 90s, but since the 2000s its usage has declined. In addition to being added to unleaded gasoline to boost its performance and cut back on emissions, MtBE is occasionally used as a solvent and has some medical applications as well. Although its use was phased out and some states eventually banned its use, it is still present in groundwater in some areas of the country, where it causes issues to the present day. How Does MtBE Get in Water? You might be wondering how a compound like MtBE ends up in drinking water, and it is not as straightforward as it might seem. The primary culprit is unlikely to be runoff, but rather underground gasoline storage tanks. Despite the fact that the widespread use of MtBE is not what it once was, there are still some fuel facilities that use MtBE bearing gasoline. Other locations that contain underground fuel tanks where MtBE bearing gasoline is still (or was once) contained are likely to have leached it into the water. MtBE may also have been released into groundwater supplies from marine engines and to a certain extent, from deposition through the air. The issue lies in the fact that MtBE is highly soluble in water, making it very easy to leach into water sources. Compounding that problem is the fact that MtBE is very stable and takes a very long time to degrade, so once it enters a water source, it will remain there for a long time. How Can You Tell If MtBE Is Present in Drinking Water?If there’s any good news in this, MtBE, unlike some dangerous contaminants, has very, very low taste and odor thresholds. This means that most people can detect it even when it is present in very low concentrations. For example, it’s estimated that most people can detect MtBE at concentrations as low as 20-40 parts per billion. Those that can detect MtBE by taste and smell report that it bears something of a smell similar to turpentine, and that the taste is similar, too - definitely not pleasant. The EPA has also noted that at these concentrations, it is possible that MtBE might not cause health risks. At any rate, MtBE is well known for causing a range of health effects, so if you’re concerned about water quality, you have two different options. One is that you can call your municipal water supplier and ask if they test for MtBE, as well as for the results of the testing. If your supplier does not test for MtBE or your water comes from a well, you can take it to a state certified testing facility to have it tested there. What Sorts of Health Hazards Does MtBE Present?MtBE is suggested to cause a wide range of deleterious health effects. Short-term effects of MtBE consumption include dizziness, headaches, nausea, and nervous system effects. Long-term effects are more concerning, as MtBE may be implicated in kidney and liver disease. MtBE has not been demonstrated to cause cancer in humans but it is has been shown to cause cancer in animals.Although the United States Environmental Protection Agency has not established a maximum contaminant level (MCL), the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has set forth a health-based standard in accordance with their own state law, the Safe Water Drinking Act. The standard is set at 13 μg/L. If a pup is a part of your family, then you’re probably familiar with the fact that some dogs have a propensity to hit up the local bathroom bar for a beverage. Not all dogs do it, but it’s common enough behavior that it has become stereotypical of canine behavior. Dogs, especially when it’s hot out, hit the bathroom for a drink from the toilet. We know. Disgusting, by any metric you want to use, and unpleasant even to think about. But if you’re going to turn this behavior around, you need to think about it. That is, you need to understand why they do it - and, as it turns out, a solution as simple as an Everpure water filtration system may be able to convince your dog to stop. Your pup is, after all, a member of your family, and deserves the same quality drinking water you do! A Cool Drink of Water One of the most basic reasons that dogs tend to head for the bathroom when they need a drink belies surprisingly human behavior: it’s about refreshment. While it might seem to use that little on this earth is less appealing than the water sitting in a toilet bowl, to a dog’s keen senses, toilet bowl water may actually smell (and possibly taste) better than the water from the tap. To understand this, we need to take a few steps back. We treat water with chlorine, which is a highly reactive chemical agent that kills a variety of microbes. Think of that “chlorine” smell that you probably recognize from your time around pools. That’s actually not chlorine, but chloramines, the by-products produced when chlorine interacts with infectious agents and destroys them. If it is an unpleasant smell for you, imagine how unpleasant it is for a dog, whose senses of smell are so many times more powerful than a human’s. The thing is, chlorine quickly evaporates from water that is exposed to the air. While water from the tap may be full of it, the water that has been sitting in the toilet likely has none or little left, which means it both smells and tastes better to your dog. Weird, but true. So, Is It a Big Deal? We won’t stand on our own merits for this, but yes, it is kind of a big deal. It’s not a good idea to let your dog drink from the toilet. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), we’re right, and there are some obvious reasons for this. For one, people routinely clean their toilets with harsh chemical agents, in order to keep them clean, safe, and sterile. These are often toxic chemicals that are not safe for ingestion - and your dog may actually ingest them if he or she drinks from the toilet. The other reason is more straightforward. This is a toilet we’re talking about after all: a receptacle for waste. Even a very clean toilet is still a toilet, and likely to be rife with germs. Homeowners need to juggle costs associated with a myriad of expenses. The monthly cable; the monthly electric and gas, and other utilities. Insurance and other premiums. Food, and, of course, as a consumable, water. Water probably lies low on the list of priorities for expense cutting because no matter where you are in the country, water is relatively affordable, if not overtly cheap. Even in areas where water consumption is limited at certain times of the year, it would be slightly misleading to say that it is expensive. The thing about this is that many consumers choose to drink bottled water instead of tap water because they believe it is safer, and they ignore the cost. But what if you could get the same (or far better, as the case may be) quality water at a much lower cost? Objectively, water is either never or almost never categorically expensive. However, if you’re actually serious about streamlining your expenses, you might be surprised at how much saving on personal water consumption may be able to save you. By the end of this post, you’ll have concrete figures on just how much money you may be able to save using an H300 water filter system. Though, we’re confident that if you apply these same calculations, you can save using many of our other water filter systems as well. How Much Water Does an Adult Human Need? In order to complete realistic calculations about water costs, let’s just set some framework. For the purposes of this calculation, we are going to assume that this water will only be used for hydration, and not for any other purpose. We’re also going to assume that we’re working with a family of two - an adult male and female. According to the United States National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the average adult male requires 3.7 liters of water per day in order to stay hydrated, whereas the average adult female requires 2.7 liters. Since we’ll be calculating these costs according to the capabilities of an Everpure H300 Filter System, we need to convert these to gallons. Such a household requires 6.4 liters of water per day for personal hydration purposes, and at 3.79 liters per gallon, that equates to 1.69 gallons per day. This also means that the same household requires 11.83 gallons of water per week and about 617 gallons per year. Assuming the accuracy of these average figures we can proceed with analysis between the cost of purchasing bottled water vs. the cost of implementing an Everpure H300 filter system. How Much Does That Cost? Assuming that this household requires 11.83 gallons of water per week or 617 gallons per year, we can project some calculations associated with the average costs of bottled water and then compare it to the lower costs of using Everpure water filtration systems. Right now, on Instacart, you can get a 40 pack of 16.9-ounce bottles of Poland Spring branded bottled water for $7.20. Just to keep the comparison faithful to the resource alone, we will omit any relevant shipping costs. That 40 pack of bottled water contains, in total, 676 ounces, and at 128 ounces per gallon, it contains, in total, 5.28 gallons. The unit cost per gallon is then $1.36. We can calculate that, at this price, it would cost $16.13 to keep the family in this hypothetical scenario hydrated for one week, and $839.12 to keep the same family hydrated for a year. This accounts only for the cost of the bottled water, and not for the costs of shipping or of gas. Let’s compare these figures to the costs of keeping the same family hydrated using an Everpure H300 filter system. By the Numbers: Saving with an H300 Water Filter System Because we omitted the cost of shipping and gas from the above calculations to determine the unit cost of water, we will also negate the cost of installing an Everpure H300 filter system, since it is fixed. We will instead focus only on the variable, unit cost of water. The cost of one Everpure H300 filter on our website is $65, but if you buy them in bundles of 3, your unit cost drops to $63 each. Each Everpure H300 filter is capable of filtering the impurities from 300 gallons of water. There are several models that are used to determine the cost of water for households throughout the country. There are increasing and declining block rates, seasonal and drought rates, and budget-based rates. Some homeowners with wells do not pay for water directly, only for treatments used and the electricity required to pump water to the surface. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, following a water-budget-based rate, the cost per thousand gallons is fairly close to $1.50 - although this is subject to fluctuation and other factors, we will use it for the purposes of these calculations. This gives a unit price per gallon of 1 and a half cents per gallon. All we have to do now is amortize the cost of the filter itself across the 300 gallons it will be able to filter. Given an Everpure H300’s ability to filter 300 gallons, it will cost about 21 cents per gallon. Add in the additional cent and a half, rounding up for sanity, and it costs about 23 cents per gallon to implement an H300 filter system. This means that it would then also cost $2.72 in water per week to keep the same family hydrated or about $141.91 per year. In summary, using the same average figures for comparison, it would cost this hypothetical model family over $839 per year to stay hydrated by using bottled water and less than $142 to keep hydrated with an Everpure H300 filter system. We trust you can do the rest of the math. Value You Can Measure It’s not also possible that an Everpure H300 filter system can save you money on water usage.
